Wall Paneling in Montreal

Wall Paneling designed, built and installed for Montreal — triplex staircases, out-of-square rooms, and the widest humidity swing of any of our markets. Our Montreal showroom is on Jean-Talon Ouest.

What changes here

Wall Paneling in Montreal, specifically.

Quebec's older houses often still have their original panelling, and the standard is set by what is already on the wall. New work is matched to the existing profile, the existing rail height and the existing reveal, which is a measuring job before it is a making one. In newer housing the freedom is greater but the humidity constraint is the same: the substrate and the fixing method have to allow for a very wide annual movement.

Older buildings have out-of-square rooms, sloped floors and services in awkward places. Everything is templated on site.

The Montreal triplex is a specific delivery problem: an exterior staircase, a tight interior turn at the top, and often no lift. Cabinetry for those units is sized to be carried up that stair, and where a piece cannot be, it is built to assemble in the room.

Winters here are long and heated interiors get genuinely dry, then summers are humid. That annual swing is wider than most markets and it is the reason solid timber has to be detailed to move rather than fixed rigid.

How we build it

Made once, properly.

The specification below is the same whether the job is in Montreal or anywhere else we work — it is how we build, not what we build for the market.

Panelling is the quietest thing we make and the one that changes a room most. It gives a wall proportion, hides the joins where a house is not square, and carries doors, storage and lighting inside a single continuous surface — but only if it is set out properly, because a panel grid that misses its openings is worse than a plain wall.

Set out before it is made

Panel joints are planned to land on door openings, corners and switch positions rather than wherever the module falls.

Doors and storage concealed inside it

Jib doors, cupboards and services can disappear into the panelling so the wall reads as one surface.

Fluted, framed or flat

Three different registers for three different rooms — the choice is made against the architecture, not against a trend.

Where we work

Serving Montreal

We work throughout Montreal, including Outremont, Le Plateau, Griffintown, Notre-Dame-de-Grace and Ahuntsic. The housing here is triplexes and duplexes with exterior staircases, Plateau flats, converted industrial buildings in Griffintown, and detached houses in the western neighbourhoods, and the cabinetry is specified for it rather than to a national standard.

Our Montreal showroom is at 4865 Jean-Talon O.. The samples are worth handling before you choose — or send the drawings and we will price it first.

Everything else we make in Montreal

The rest of the house.

One shop draws, finishes and installs all of it, which is why the closet matches the kitchen and there is one number to call when something needs adjusting.
