Texas rooms are large enough that panelling has to be set out at the scale of the room rather than at the scale of a panel. In a double-height space the grid needs to relate to the openings and the ceiling line, or it looks like wallpaper. Done properly it is the cheapest way to give a very big room some structure, and it is often what makes a new house stop looking new.
Outdoor living is used most of the year here, and covered outdoor kitchens are a normal part of the package rather than an extra.
Southlake is a custom-build market, so we are often working with an architect and a builder rather than with a finished house. That is the best case: the cabinetry gets drawn while the walls and services can still move.
The houses are big enough that the cabinetry package covers a dozen rooms. Keeping one material and hardware language across all of them is what makes a house of that size read as designed rather than assembled.
The specification below is the same whether the job is in Southlake or anywhere else we work — it is how we build, not what we build for the market.
Panelling is the quietest thing we make and the one that changes a room most. It gives a wall proportion, hides the joins where a house is not square, and carries doors, storage and lighting inside a single continuous surface — but only if it is set out properly, because a panel grid that misses its openings is worse than a plain wall.
Three different registers for three different rooms — the choice is made against the architecture, not against a trend.
Panel joints are planned to land on door openings, corners and switch positions rather than wherever the module falls.
Jib doors, cupboards and services can disappear into the panelling so the wall reads as one surface.
