Ontario's older houses have the alcoves, chimney breasts and awkward corners that built-in joinery exists for, and its newer houses have big blank walls that need something to hold them. Both benefit from the same discipline: set the joinery out to the room, plan the services into it, and detail it to match the age of the house rather than the year it was installed.
The condominium stock is enormous and the buildings run strict rules: certificates of insurance, booked service elevators, protected corridors, restricted hours and, in many buildings, no moves at weekends. The install is scheduled around the building.
Heated winters take indoor humidity very low, and summers bring it back up. Solid timber elements are detailed for that swing, and a panel that was fine in a Florida house is not automatically fine here.
Toronto's older houses are narrow, tall and rarely square, with kitchens at the back and basements that matter. Site templating is standard, and a run that measures true on the plan will not be true on the wall.

A media wall, a library, a bar, a window seat, a home office — each one turns an awkward wall or an unused alcove into something the room needs, and each one has to be set out to the architecture rather than dropped in front of it.
In an older property the profiles are matched to what is already there; in a contemporary one the reveals do the work instead.
Shelf spacing, panel widths and reveals are drawn to the wall's real dimensions and to what is going on the shelves.
Power, data, ventilation and cable routes are designed into the joinery, not chased in afterwards.
