Almost every New York kitchen is a fitting problem before it is a design one. The room is smaller than the brief, the building is older than the plan assumes, and the walls are neither square nor plumb. That is why nothing here is fabricated from a drawing alone — the run is templated on site, scribes are drawn in from the start, and tall units are engineered so they can physically be carried into the room. Getting the appliances agreed early matters more here than anywhere, because in a space this tight a change of oven can move the whole run.
This is a seasonal market with a hard calendar. Work happens off-season, and the deadline is not a date on a schedule — it is Memorial Day. Everything is planned backwards from that.
The houses are coastal and frequently closed for months. Salt air, damp and long unheated periods all argue for moisture-stable cores, ventilated joinery and hardware chosen for the environment.
The villages have historic districts and active review boards. Anything affecting an exterior needs approval before fabrication, and out here that timeline is genuinely long.

A custom kitchen is not a better-made version of a stock one — it is a different process. The plan is drawn around how the room is actually used and what appliances are going in it, and the cabinetry is then made to that drawing. Nothing is sized to a catalogue module, which is why a custom kitchen fits a room that stock cabinetry can only approximate.
Cabinet widths follow the plan. There are no filler panels covering the difference between a catalogue size and the wall.
The grain match approved on a sample is the grain match delivered, because the same shop sprays every panel in the run.
Every cutout, clearance and ventilation run comes from the appliance list, so we ask for it at the first meeting rather than at the end.
