Built-Ins and Wall Units in Queens

Built-Ins and Wall Units designed, built and installed for Queens — Tudor houses and new towers, needing opposite answers. Our New York showroom in Brooklyn is a short run from most of the borough.

What changes here

Built-Ins & Wall Units in Queens, specifically.

In New York, built-ins are how an apartment gets storage it does not otherwise have. A wall of joinery in a pre-war living room replaces a room's worth of furniture and gives back the floor, and in a rowhouse the alcoves either side of a chimney breast are usually the only place a library can go. All of it is set out to walls that are not straight, and detailed to sit with mouldings that are a century old.

The single-family stock is older and characterful — arched openings, plaster, original trim — and the cabinetry is usually detailed to sit alongside it rather than to replace the character.

The co-ops run alteration agreements as strictly as Manhattan does, including insurance, working hours and elevator scheduling.

Queens has the widest range of housing of any borough, and the brief changes completely between a Forest Hills Tudor and a Long Island City tower. The first conversation is about which of those two problems we are solving.

How we build it

What you are actually buying.

The local detail changes from job to job. This part does not.

Built-in joinery is what makes a room feel finished rather than furnished. A media wall, a library, a bar, a window seat, a home office — each one turns an awkward wall or an unused alcove into something the room needs, and each one has to be set out to the architecture rather than dropped in front of it.

Detailed to the house

In an older property the profiles are matched to what is already there; in a contemporary one the reveals do the work instead.

Set out to the room

Shelf spacing, panel widths and reveals are drawn to the wall's real dimensions and to what is going on the shelves.

Services planned in

Power, data, ventilation and cable routes are designed into the joinery, not chased in afterwards.

Where we work

Serving Queens

We work throughout Queens, including Forest Hills, Astoria, Jamaica Estates, Bayside and Long Island City. The housing here is Tudor and colonial single-family houses, a large stock of pre-war and post-war co-ops, and new towers in Long Island City, and the cabinetry is specified for it rather than to a national standard.

Our New York showroom in Brooklyn is a short run from most of the borough. The showroom is at 1200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn. The samples are worth handling before you choose — or send the drawings and we will price it first.
