California dressing rooms are usually more open than closed — glazed to the bedroom, sometimes without doors at all — which means the inside of the joinery is permanently on display. That changes the specification: consistent internal finishes, lighting inside the shelving rather than a ceiling fitting, and a discipline about what is visible and what goes behind a front. Near the coast the marine air is a genuine factor in what hardware gets specified.
Hillside properties are an access problem. Narrow streets, long stair runs from the kerb and no staging area mean cabinets are sized to be carried by hand and delivered in sequence rather than all at once.
Seismic requirements mean tall cabinetry and heavy runs are anchored properly. That is straightforward when it is planned and awkward when it is not.
Los Angeles housing is stylistically specific in a way most markets are not. A Spanish Colonial in Hancock Park and a mid-century in Silver Lake want genuinely different cabinetry, and the fastest way to get a house wrong is to apply one language to both.

A closet is a storage problem with a fixed inventory: a specific number of long-hanging pieces, short-hanging pieces, folded items, shoes and bags. Designed against that inventory it works for years. Designed as an even grid of rails and shelves it is full within a season, which is why the first conversation is a count rather than a drawing.
We start from what actually has to go in — long, short, folded, shoes, bags — rather than filling the room with equal shelves.
Lighting sits in the shelving and behind the hanging rails, so what you are looking at is lit rather than shadowed by your own body.
Soft-close throughout, drawers rather than doors at low level, and hardware rated for the number of cycles a dressing room actually sees.
