In Quebec a bathroom is the wettest room in a house that spends half the year sealed and heated, which is a harder combination than either condition alone. Cores, edge sealing and finish are specified for that, and solid timber is detailed for the annual movement. A vanity is the piece of cabinetry that takes the most abuse in a house — standing water, steam, heat from styling tools and daily opening — in the smallest space. It has to be built for that and still look like furniture, which is a materials decision as much as a design one.
Floating the vanity keeps the floor continuous and makes a small bathroom read larger, and it puts the plumbing where it can be reached.
