Panelling suits Ontario's older housing because the houses were built with it in mind — the proportions expect a rail and a base, and a flat drywall wall in an Edwardian room always looks like something is missing. In newer construction it does the opposite job, giving a large plain room some relief. Either way the substrate has to be detailed for the winter-to-summer humidity swing, because a rigid panel grid will open at the joints.
The winter humidity drop is significant, and it is the single most common cause of panel movement in houses of this age when the timber was not detailed for it.
Vaughan is a newer-build market, so most cabinetry work is upgrading a builder specification rather than repairing an old one. The visible differences are in door construction, drawer hardware and how the tall run resolves at the ceiling.
The houses are large and the packages are correspondingly big — kitchen, servery, pantry, mudroom, basement bar and closets in one programme. Doing them together is both cheaper and more coherent.
The local detail changes from job to job. This part does not.
Panelling is the quietest thing we make and the one that changes a room most. It gives a wall proportion, hides the joins where a house is not square, and carries doors, storage and lighting inside a single continuous surface — but only if it is set out properly, because a panel grid that misses its openings is worse than a plain wall.
Three different registers for three different rooms — the choice is made against the architecture, not against a trend.
Panel joints are planned to land on door openings, corners and switch positions rather than wherever the module falls.
Jib doors, cupboards and services can disappear into the panelling so the wall reads as one surface.
